OVAC tournaments

April 22, 2008 - Mike Mathison
The OVAC softball tournament began Monday and baseball does so Tuesday. I have said before in columns, the OVAC must go back to four teams per classification and get rid of the current eight-team format.

I've been told it went from four to eight because some "prominent" baseball coaches wanted to make sure their teams got in each year.

Don't care.

The bottom four teams in the Class A baseball standings are 11-52 and two haven't won a game in 29 starts.

It's worse in Class A softball.

Teams are going to spend more time in the bus than they will on their respective fields in the first rounds Monday and Tuesday.

That's unacceptable.

If a team finishes fifth, well, it finishes fifth. There will be plenty of teams to find games with during OVAC playoff week if teams that don't make the playoffs want to play.

This charade of eight teams cannot continue.

Please, coaches, go back to four.
