Headphones and Anger

March 31, 2009 - Print to web Print to Web
While listening to the X morning show on 105.9 THE X on my way to work this morning, they brought up a story on how the Pirates demoted outfielder Andrew McCuthen. Their best spring training player. Now before I say why, I do understand that it IS spring training, but this kid is good. (Funny I say kid as he is almost assureidly older than me..yep 22) He batted .318 with two homers, seven RBI's, 2 steals and 12 walks and finished as the best defensive outfielder in the Major League camp this spring. That is better than some players did all of LAST SEASON. And he gets sent down. Understandably for not going thru the ranks, notably AAA ball. But if he did this in the Major's Spring Training, shouldn't that kind of outrank AAA ball? The real reason they sent him down, and have admitted this, is that if they use him in the Majors before May or June, his contract is eligible for arbitration in 2014 instead of 2015...I'm sure most of you know how I feel already about the spending aspect of Pirate ball. So for now, while the season may very well end up being lost even before McCutchen steps foot in the locker room again, after outperforming many of the current roster, I'll sit here with my headphones on, boiling like a tea kettle. Because 2009 > 2014 doesn't it? LETS GO BUCS!
