Searching the Stars
August 26, 2013 - Craig Howell
Our area has no shortage of people who give of themselves to help others. Civic leaders, police officers, firefighters, and many others often get the publicity for their work, as they should, but there are many more who step forward to lend a hand, and then just as quickly and quietly step back behind the crowd. They are not looking for recognition. They do what they do simply because they know there are others in need and they can do something about it. Each year, The Weirton Daily Times and Herald-Star seek to recognize some of those special givers who tend to shy away from the spotlight. We call them our "Community Stars," and we are seeking nominations through the end of August. To nominate someone, simply send in a nomination form (found in our newspaper) and an explanation of why the person is being nominated. Submissions are due by Aug. 30 and can be mailed to: Jody Wisbith, Attn. Community Stars, Herald-Star, 401 Herald Square, Steubenville, OH 43952. Nominations can be e-mailed to email@example.com or submitted on the Virtual Newsroom sites of the Herald-Star or The Weirton Daily Times. Nominees can come from Jefferson, Harrison, Brooke, Hancock and Washington counties. The only criteria is that the individuals whose names are submitted work to make a positive difference in their cities and towns by caring for those around them. Ten will be selected as this year's Community Stars. On Oct. 7, we will have a dinner to recognize the selected "Stars," as well as a special publication featuring their stories. This year's dinner is being presented with cooperation from Weirton Medical Center. We have many wonderful people in the Ohio Valley — men, women, young and old — who have found ways to help others. Some may volunteer hundreds of hours at a local hospital, organize food drives for the needy, or raise money for safety programs. They are all stars in their own way, and with your help we can shine the spotlight on some of them.
