I didn't ask for snow for my birthday

March 21, 2014 - Craig Howell
Today is March 21.

It's officially spring...and it's snowing!

It's also my birthday. I didn't ask for snow for my birthday, so why is it snowing? It's not even light flurries. This is a heavier snow and it has lasted for a few hours already. This isn't the gift I wanted, so none of you can blame me for it.

Of course, my mom sent me a text and reminded me that 35 years ago, on March 21, it snowed. The day before it was warm enough to go outside without a coat. And, apparently, Mork and Mindy was on television.

All I wanted was a nice, quiet day. I knew most of it would be taken up by work stuff, and I probably wouldn't even be able to go home until late this evening with the various articles and special projects I need to finish right now. I'm trying to think of a possible restaurant trip for some point in the weekend. But I didn't ask for snow.

I'm not going to blame the local weather folks as most people would, because I know it's not an exact science. You can look at patterns and models all day, but the smallest condition changes by even the slightest bit and none of the forecasts matter.

So, now it's coming up on 11:55 a.m., the time I was born judging by that little card from the hospital which now sits in one of my photo albums, and I am looking out the window and seeing various buildings in downtown Steubenville covered in a blanket of white stuff.

Hey, Mother Nature! Can I exchange this one?
