Sports teaches fans and athletes lessons
This is the week that area fans of high school football have been anticipating for nearly nine months, and it starts off with a bang: Weir High School will scrimmage Weirton Madonna at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Jimmy Carey Stadium.
This is the first time since 1975 that the two city teams have played each other.
Football, with its traditions and pageantry, holds a special place in the hearts of sports fans throughout the Tri-State Area.
Players have been practicing for more than a month in preparation for the season. Among the lessons they learn are the importance of setting goals and then working to attain them, all while understanding that sacrifices will be demanded along the way.
They also learn about the importance of having pride in themselves, their schools and their communities.
