BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. — A 16-year-old Burgettstown Junior/Senior High School student allegedly assaulted a staff member, then allegedly assaulted police officers who took her into custody Wednesday.

The student is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and simple assault, according to police reports.

The girl was held in the Jefferson County, Ohio juvenile detention center in Steubenville before a court appearance in Washington County Family Court Thursday, according to officials.

School district officials declined to comment on the matter, citing an “ongoing” investigation.

The girl allegedly assaulted a staff member at the high school, then left the school. Administrators called the Smith Township Police Department, and officers at that department and the Burgettstown and Hanover Township police departments were asked to watch for the student, according to Smith Township Police Chief Bernie LaRue.

Burgettstown Police Chief George Roberts reported locating the girl walking on Main Street near the Rite Aid Pharmacy and attempted to take her into custody. The girl allegedly resisted, and George reported receiving a minor injury to his hand. A Hanover Township officer was passing by and stopped and assisted George with the arrest, according to reports.
