Good mothers are a blessing
By SUE AZZARELLOYesterday the country celebrated Mother’s Day.
Restaurants were packed and perfume and flowers were presented to the special women in our lives — the ones who bore us, or at least, bore all of our troubles growing up: from dirty diapers, runny noses, illnesses and lost pets to our first lost tooth. If we were fortunate, she was there to doctor our scraped knees and elbows to help mend our broken hearts when a romance ended or a beloved pet died.
My mom has been there for me through it all: the good, the bad, and the heart-wrenchingly worst. We are not just mother and daughter, we are best friends. I have always trusted her invaluable advice and rare wisdom. After all, she has 36 more years of experience at life than I have, and nothing quite equals the school of experience!
Throughout 56 years of marriage, my now late father was her confidant and best friend, and she is mine!
I am so very blessed to have such a magnificent mother and father. While I was growing up here in Weirton, I thought all kids had great, sweet, loving and caring parents like mine; but, after I grew up and went out into the real world, I sadly learned otherwise.
I remember being in my late teens or early 20s when I was out somewhere and for some reason I told a clerk to give my money to my parents. Her reply still resonates in my head: “You trust your parents enough for me to give them your money?”
At the time, I thought her remark was very strange. I?told her, “Of course!” But, what I thought in my head was: “Why wouldn’t I trust my parents with my money?”
Now, after reading a lot of the headlines in today’s deeply troubled world, many children don’t have good, honest, trustworthy parents. Many parents today take their kids’ money and buy drugs with it or spend it on something they don’t need.
Yes, I was truly blessed to have such a wonderful mother and father, and I thank the Lord for them. After all, without them, I would not be writing these words or living life.
And, Mom, thank you for being irreplaceable you and for being my best friend!
