Invitation to celebrate freedom

Citizens encouraged to attend June 26 event

POSTED: May 25, 2008

Hope Ministries, a group of local Christians, will host “A Celebration of Freedom” at the R.J. Bush Center, 3474 Pennsylvania Ave., on June 26.

The Rev. Jim Rhodes, co-founder of Hope Ministries, said that he and several members of the local Christian community decided to take a day near the Fourth of July and dedicate it to the celebration of America’s freedom. He also said a free cookout will be held at the R.J. Bush Center to commemorate this day.

Rhodes said this event is open to the public and that he is specifically inviting members of the armed services, local law enforcement, fire fighters, emergency responders and state police.

“We want to recognize anyone who has served or is serving to promote our country and its freedoms,” he said. “These individuals are out there everyday. They keep us safe. They keep us free. They help preserve our way of life, and they deserve our thanks.”

Mayor Mark Harris reported he will participate in the event by recognizing the military persons and public servants who have gone above the call of duty to ensure the freedom and safety of our country.

Harris said there are several local individuals who have directly saved lives during his time as mayor who he believes should be thanked publicly.

“If you know anyone who should be recognized, call the city building and inform us of their names so we can get in touch with them and recognize them at the event,” he said.

Rhodes stated Captain Jonathan Bell, a U.S. Air Force chaplain, will be present at the cookout to speak on freedom as well as the importance of God and country. Other functions planned for the event include a live performance by The Journeymen and a video presentation on patriotism, courtesy of the USAF.

“This isn’t a church function,” he said. “This is a celebration of freedom to bring everyone together.”

The deadline to submit names for recognition at the event is June 16.

Rhodes said more information on the cookout will be made available as scheduling is completed.
