Farmer's Market to begin July 7
The Weirton Farmer’s Market will be held every Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. beginning July 7, in the parking lot of the Weirton Wal-Mart on Three Springs Drive. The Market will remain open through the end of October. The Follansbee Farmer’s Market will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. every other Wednesday starting July 9, until October 29 and will be held in the Follansbee Town Square. According to the Hancock County Extension Service, these are locally grown markets and the consumer will find excellent produce from the farmers and gardeners. The growing season also determines how much produce is available and when it is ready. The Weirton and Follansbee Farmer’s Markets have been approved to participate in the West Virginia Department of Agriculture Senior Farm Market Nutrition Program. Any senior in the area can apply for free produce coupons that can only be redeemed at a local farmer’s market. Contact your local Senior Center for an application or locations throughout the counties were applications will be taken. Extension office telephone numbers are Brooke County, 527-4635, and Hancock County, 564-3805. Markets are also approved to accept WIC coupons. For details check with the Hancock County WIC Office at 723-3153 or the Brooke County WIC Office at 394-5090. Vendors will sell locally grown produce or some added-value products. Baked goods may also be sold; however, crafts and flea market items are not permitted. All vendors must be registered with the Hancock County Extension Office. The office can be reached by telephone at 564-3805 or by e-mail to Sharon.Feragott@mail.wvu.edu.
