Museum displays vintage dresses

NEW CUMBERLAND - The Hancock County Historical Museum is featuring a display wedding gowns for the enjoyment of residents and tourists.
A wedding ensemble from the turn of the century; two, three-generation collections spanning the years 1940 through 1980; a pink and silk and lace trousseau, including silk stockings; a wedding party outfit of lovely satin bride's gown and three attendants dresses are displayed throughout the 1887 home that is a fine example of late Victorian home construction.
According to museum docents, visitors will enjoy the ambience created by touches of lavish decorations including an elegant table-setting complete with champagne, wedding cake, orange blossons, lily of the valley and roses, and "A?Sixpence for her Shoe."
Of historic significance is a newspaper article dated 1906 from the East Liverpool review describing the wedding of Miss Edith that took place in the museum, that was her home.
The tour is self-guided and a fine way to spend a leisurely hour. A docent will be on hand to answer questions. The museum is open from 12:30 to 4 p.m. every Sunday and always available by appointment.
Collections of artifacts important to Hancock County are growing with many generous gifts to the museum. A handmade grandfather clock of walnut donated by Jean Milton of New Cumberland, a vintage Orphan Annie doll donated by Vera Herron of New Manchester, lovely vintage clothing donated by the Capito Family of Weirton, a land grant signed by Patrick Henry donated by Bob and Carolyn Wells of Newell, a vintage parlor set by the Fox Family of Weirton and several items that speak of life in Hancock County in days gone by are just a few examples that attest to the important preservation work being done by the Hancock County Historical Museum commission members, advisors and volunteers of the museum.
