American Legion Auxiliary elects new officers for 2009

The installation of officers of the 2008-2009 year was held at the June meeting if the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 10.

The installing officer was Betty Rae, district president and new officers are President Yvonne Schifamo, First Vice President Edith Truax, Second Vice President Sharon Ballard, Secretary Patty Hans, Treasurer Gloria Jerrel, Sergeant at Army Liz Bonovich, Historian Jeanie Henline and Chaplain Betty Lesky.

A covered dish dinner followed the installation.

The Auxiliary, along with donations from the community, sponsored six girls from Weir and Weirton Madonna to attend Rhododendron Girls State, an event for all state auxiliaries. Those attending were Mari Kolanko, Paige Dalrymple, Stephanie Rosnich, Leah Crow, Devon McCune and Amanda Thorp. Janelle Jones was the 2007 representative. Three scholarships were awarded during the event; McCune won the "STAR"?Leadership Scholarship.

Boxes will again be sent to the Auxiliary's five "Adopt-A-Soldiers" stationed in Iraq. This project will be continued into the next fiscal year. Boxes of food and comfort items are sent to these soldiers on certain holiday.

On June 22 the Auxiliary hosted an ice cream social at the Weirton Geriatric Complex for veterans and other residents. Volunteers made banana splits and shirts were given to the 26 veterans who reside there. Patty Hans served at event chairman.

Poppy Day was held in May with Lisa McConnell as chairman. All proceeds from this event are used for the benefit of veterans.

A bake sale was held at the Weirton Wal-Mart on May 31 with Patty Hans as chairman.

Future fundraisers for Unit 10 include the annual holiday and special event baskets and nut roll sale.

Auxiliary meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month.
