ArcelorMittal offers $64,000 in scholarships

July 13, 2008 - By GIOVANNI P. ROSSI, Staff writer

ArcelorMittal USA announced it has provided $64,000 in scholarships to children of local mill workers.

Mary Beth Holdford, communications officer for the steel company, reported that this is the third year such funds have been provided. Holdford noted this money has been divided into four, four-year scholarships of $4,000 each.

"Each recipient is the son or daughter of an employee at the ArcelorMittal Weirton location," she said. "All they have to do to maintain the funds is hold a solid grade point average at an accredited college, university or technical school."

Holdford stated applications for the scholarships were reviewed by the Legacy Foundation, an independent third party. The winners were chosen on their high school academic performances, test scores, extra-curricular activities, character and written essays.

The following four students were selected from the 66 scholarship applicants:

* Brooke High School graduate Emily R. Viglianco of Weirton.

* Claymont High School graduate Lee-Anna J. Bardum of Urichsville, Ohio.

* Oak Glen High School graduate Chad J. Hines of New Cumberland.

* Brooke High School graduate Carrie A. Moore of Follansbee.
