presents petroglyph workshop for kids
A petroglyph workshop will be offered at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Students in grades 4 to 6 are invited; each student is to be accompanied by an adult. The workshop is part of a series of programs celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Delf Norona Museum.
Students will enjoy an afternoon of designing their own petroglyphs using plaques made of dried pottery clay, and discussing the meaning of West Virginia's petroglyphs. Pre-registration is required, and there will be a $2 material fee to ensure there are enough supplies for each participant.
Petroglyphs are drawings and symbols carved into boulders and rock faces by prehistoric people. In West Virginia, these drawings often depict human figures, birds and other animals. At the workshop students will learn about the carvings and get the opportunity to study pictures of petroglyphs which are displayed at the Complex.
For information or to register for the program, contact Andrea Keller, cultural program coordinator for the Grave Creek Mound, at (304) 843-4128, Ext. 202, or by e-mail at andrea.keller@wvculture.org.

Italian Festival requires wristbands
In cooperation with the Wheeling Police Department's ongoing efforts to curb underage drinking, the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival Board of Directors announced that any person drinking beer or wine at this year's festival on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, will be required to wear a special wristband on festival grounds.
Sensitive to the difficulty police have encountered when enforcing underage drinking laws while patrolling large crowds, the Board of Directors voted last year, in the interest of public safety, to require festival beer and wine drinkers to wear special wristbands which will be available for $1 at booths located next to the beer and wine stands.
Wristbands will be effective for the entire weekend, but may be re-purchased throughout the weekend should a patron remove or misplace one.
Proceeds from wristband sales will be used to defray the high cost of security at the festival.
The Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival will be held at Wheeling's Heritage Port. Information can be found at www.italyfest.com or by calling the festival office at (304) 233-1090.
