School takes on Rachel's Challenge
Colliers Primary School is implementing Rachel's Challenge and recently held a kick-off assembly which inspired and motivated the students to start a "chain reaction" of kindness in their school.
The school also held a parent information meeting on the topic.
The program is a professionally developed curriculum that will be used in the classrooms to supplement the Brooke County Anti-Bullying Curriculum. The curriculum covers five central themes in Rachel's Challenge: Influence, Goal Setting, Journaling, Acceptance, and Kindness.
Each of the sections provides practical ways to practice these ideas and activities. By focusing on creating a culture of kindness and compassion at the school, the program doesn't just treat the symptoms: it directly addresses the root problems of isolation, prejudice and bullying.
Students are encouraged to consider new students, victims of bullying and students with special needs in their actions on a daily basis.
Christina Rush, the school guidance counselor, presented the program to the students and spoke to them about Rachel's Challenge.
Rush shared these words with them. "Don't let your character change color with your environment. Find out who you are and let it stay its true color." These words are those of Columbine High School junior Rachel Scott. Her inspirational words were left behind in six journals, which she had written. In an essay written one month before her death, Rachel challenged her readers to "Start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion."
The students and staff of Colliers Primary have accepted that challenge and signed the Rachel's Challenge Banner. It will then hang in the school hallway as a reminder of the commitment that each took to be part of the "chain reaction." Jo-Ellen Goodall, the school's principal, is excited to have such a wonderful program at the school and asked each student to accept Rachel's Challenge. After the program, the students were discussing the different ways that they have been and will display acts of compassion and kindness. All students who are "caught" doing random acts of kindness will have their names placed on chain links. The chains will then be hung in the school hallways.
Colliers Primary will not focus on the passing of such a tremendous young woman, but rather the way she lived.
