TORONTO — An annual covered-dish picnic at Austin Lake commemorated the 45th anniversary of the Jefferson Ruritans, with Don Clarke extending a welcome to guests and Lamont McCoy giving the invocation.
Guests were Robert “Bud” Hyndman, Buckeye Ruritan Zone 8 governor; John Corrigan, clerk of courts; Judge Joseph Bruzzese; and members of the Bergholz Ruritan.
Hyndman reminded members of the zone meeting to be hosted by the Buckeye Ruritan at the New Alexandria Grange Hall Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
Corrigan spoke on the need for passports to enter Canada, a stipulation that started June 1. He said passports for children expire after 5 years, as children change in looks after that time, and 10 years for an adult.
During the past month 52 passports have been issued, and it can be done in Jefferson County no matter in what state the applicant resides, he said. Corrigan noted the location in Rayland, in the southern end of the county, is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for this service, license renewals and other business.
A thank-you was read from Lee Mettenberger, the organization’s scholarship recipient.
The group will sponsor a funnel cake, snow cone and soft drink stand at the Toronto Festival of the Arts in September.
Don and Cheryl Clarke, Les Grimes and Glen McLain were in charge of arrangements for the picnic.
