Hancock fair to kick off Sept. 18
By JEN MATSICK, For The Weirton Daily TimesNEW MANCHESTER - A variety of entertainment will greet visitors of the Hancock County Fair, scheduled Sept. 18-20 at Tomlinson Run State Park.
From impersonators to mimes, many new acts are planned, as well as some returning favorites.
The entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 with a bluegrass jam session led in part by Tri-State Grass member Bernie Virden.
"He rounds up everybody and they just have a big jam session," fair board member Barbara Zagula explained.
Kicking off the lineup at noon on Sept. 19 will be the Silent Messengers, a mime troupe from Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church.
Bluegrass group Lonesome Heart will perform the first of two concerts at 1 p.m. Sept. 19. The group's second concert is set at 4 p.m. Sept. 20.
The band was formed in 1993 and has performed at Jamboree In the Hills numerous times. Lonesome Heart performs contemporary, traditional and original bluegrass music.
Other entertainment will include Suzanne Laughlin, an East Liverpool native, at 2 p.m. Sept. 19. She is one of two singing impersonators who will perform at the fair.
Also, Cosmo, a Dean Martin impersonator and a new act for the fair, will perform at 3 p.m. Sept. 19.
The audience will become the entertainment at 5 p.m. during the yodeling contest. Those who enter the contest will need to pay an additional cost.
Finishing up Sept. 19's entertainment lineup will be 1950s and '60s band All 4 One, the George Lucas Band, and Tri-State Grass.
Entertainment on Sept. 20 kicks off with magician Jim Tate, "The Magic Man," at 11 a.m., followed by the 3:16 Band, a gospel rock group, at noon.
Following the 3:16 Band, the West Virginia 4-H Dance Ambassadors will perform at 1 p.m.
The remaining lineup for Sept. 20 is country band Mary, Joe and Harry at 2 p.m.; Tri-State Harmonizers, 3 p.m.; and Lonesome Heart's second concert, 4 p.m.
Admission for the fair is $1.
