Fall Food Handler's classes announced

Food Handler's Classes for the months of September and October have been scheduled by the Hancock County Health Department. Dates and times follow:

  • Monday, 1 p.m., Greater Weirton Senior Center, 3425 Main St., Weirton. This class is co-sponsored by the senior center.
  • Tuesday, 5 p.m., New Manchester Fire Hall, New Manchester. This class is co-sponsored by the New Manchester Fire Department.

(The September classes will be ideal for volunteers who wish to participate in the Hancock County Old-time Fair and New Cumberland's first River Fest to obtain their food handler's cards.)

  • Oct. 15, 11 a.m., and 3 p.m., at the Swaney Memorial Library in New Cumberland.

All classes are for volunteers as well as those employed in the food service industry. Classes will be taught by Sanitarians from the Hancock County Health Department.

Anyone involved in food preparation in Hancock and Brooke counties are required to possess a current Food Handler Card. Those attending the class will be issued a card that is valid in either Hancock or Brooke counties in West Virginia.

Attendees who volunteer to do food preparation for a not-for-profit organization will be issued a card good for one year at no cost at the completion of the class.

The cost of food handler cards for those attending the class who are employed in some type of food service industry are as follows:

A food-handler card that is good for one-year costs $5; a food-handler card good for two-years costs $10; and a food-handler card good for three-years costs $15.
