N.C. Lions begins new club year

September 14, 2009

The New Cumberland Lions Club held its first meeting of the 2009-2010 club year on Sept. 8 at the New Cumberland Municipal Building.

The meeting was called to order by President Betsy Wells. The invocation was given by Dorothy Hawkes, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by members.

Minutes of the brief meeting held at the club's steak fry on Aug. 25 were read by Secretary, Loranna Tate. The financial report was given by Treasurer Jim Wells.

Correspondence was read; a thank you from a person helped by the club in receiving eye glasses.

Wells presented a certificate of membership to Arland Lamp, and a certificate was presented to Russell Flanigan for sponsoring Lamp.

A report was presented by Flanigan on the annual car show that area clubs sponsor at Cabela's on Labor Day.

Bob Manypenny reported that workers are needed to help on Sept. 25 and 26 at the River Fest in New Cumberland. The club will be selling pulled pork, baked beans and brooms.

Manypenny also announced that there will be a paper drive on Sept. 19. Newspapers cannot be placed in plastic bags, just tied in bundles and put in a paper bag or box.

John Patton announced that eye exams in area schools for 5th and 6th graders will take place during the last week of October. The schedule will be announced soon.

The next meeting will be held on Sept. 22.

Anyone interested in joining this community-minded organization can contact Bob Manypenny, membership chairman at (304) 564-5055 or any Lions Club member.
