Church cemetery gets Eagle fence
POSTED: September 18, 2009
Pine Grove United Methodist Church was the recipient of a Boy Scout Troop 49 Eagle project valued at nearly $30,000.
Daniel Householder. 16, of Irondale completed the construction phase of his project, a fence that encircles the cemetery next to the church.
A large number of volunteers gave up part of their Labor Day holiday to attach pickets to the fence frame at exacting 2-inch intervals. Three previous workdays were used to dig post holes and assemble the framework and an additional workday is scheduled to stain the completed structure.
Robert Musgrave, Ohio River Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, advancement chairman, visited to observe the effort of Scouts, church members and community volunteers.
He said, “Now at the beginning of the 100 anniversary of Boy Scouts, this is proof positive that the scouting spirit is still alive and thriving in the Ohio Valley and especially in Jefferson County.”
Daniel, son of Susan Householder and the late David Householder, is a junior at Edison Local High School and is the first Eagle candidate from Irondale since his scoutmaster, Lucas Hubbler, obtained the highest rank in scouting more than a dozen years ago.
Householder plans to complete requirements to obtain his Eagle badge and then begin working on his Eagle Palms.
