Community briefsSeptember 29, 2009Pearson state Elks award winner Chris Pearson, Past Exalted Ruler of Weirton Elks Lodge 1801 was the state winner of the "11 O'Clock Toast" award, and Heidi Hubbard of Sistersville Elks Lodge 333 was the state winner of the "Salute to the Flag" by the West Virginia State Elks Association. The awards were presented by Grand Exalted Ruler James Nickleson at the Mid-Year Conference held in Huntington. Society to hold meeting, reunion The Phoenix Society of West Virginia Inc. will host a membership meeting and reunion on Sunday on the Lick Run property. The Phoenix Society is comprised of members of the old Weirton Heights Volunteer Fire Department. The membership meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and several society issues will be discussed. The society approved a working agreement with the Medical Reserve Corps, the Hancock-Weirton CERT?Team and the Weirton Literacy Council. The reunion is for members and friends of Weirton VFD?Co. 1 and the WHVFD. Those members who cannot attend are asked to provide contact information, including cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses, to the society. Admission is $1 (because of IRS?and state regulations), and food and beverages will be provided. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting/reunion will be moved to the old West End Fire Station. Sportsmen to host turkey shoot The Colliers Sportsmen's Club is hosting a turkey shoot on Sunday at the club beginning at 1:30 p.m. The event is open to the public with 12-gauge, 16-gauge and 20-gauge shotguns only. Fall festival dinner announced The United Methodist Women of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, located at 101 Lisa Court in Weirton, invite the community to attend their Fall Festival Dinner set for Oct. 8. The dinner will be from 4 to 6 p.m., and both dine in and carry out will be available. Pet contest to be held The Brooke County 4-H Program will hold a "Prettiest Pet Contest" during the Wellsburg Applefest. Pet owners are invited to decorate a large coffee can with their pets photo and name, and bring it and a the $3 entry fee to the West Virginia University Extension Service or the 4-H Tent, both on Charles Street, no later than 6 p.m. Friday, the first day of the Applefest. Festival-goers may cast votes by making a 25-cent donation. The winner will be announced at 3 p.m. Sunday, but need not be present. |
