Organizers of the annual Shop with a Cop in Hancock County are preparing for this year's event, and are looking for donations as well as those who may be in need of assistance through the program.

The Shop with a Cop program is sponsored each year by the Hancock County Deputy Sheriff's Association.

"This is the 20th year," organizer Tom Tompos said.

According to Tompos, over the years the program has been able to help out 4,000 kids.

Beginning Wednesday, applications for those interested in receiving assistance through Shop with a Cop will be available at several locations in the area, including Kmart and Penn-Way Pharmacy in Weirton; Sparkle in New Cumberland and Chester and the Newell Marathon station.

Applications are to be brought to the Family Courthouse at the former New Cumberland Elementary. Those applying must bring a report card and birth certificate for the child taking part, as well as two pay stubs, and a utility bill to prove residency.

Tompos also explained anyone receiving assistance from other local agencies, such as the Salvation Army, will be ineligible for Shop with a Cop.

"We all work together," Tompos said, adding all of the groups compare lists of who has received aide.

Tompos said there also will be collection cans available throughout the area. Contributions also can be made by sending them to Shop with a Cop, PO Box 2206, Weirton, WV 26062

"Everything goes toward the kids," Tompos said.
