Community briefsNovember 5, 2009Turkey dinner at PV Methodist on Wednesday Final preparations are underway for the annual turkey dinner at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The church is located on Lisa Court in Weirton. The dinner features a menu of turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls, beverage and homemade desserts. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children under six. Center offers fresh greens class The Wheeling Civic Garden Center, Oglebay Park, will present a workshop entitled, "Fresh Green Arrangements and Wreaths" at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 3. Come and join in this holiday tradition. Instructors will be showing how to create fresh noble fir wreaths and mixed pine arrangements. Projects can be adorned with bows, berries, candles, birds and other accessories. A?$25 deposit must be received by Nov. 23 to secure your spot and available materials. Total cost may vary according to materials selected. There is a $3 charge for non-members of the center. Reservations are required. Call the center at (304) 242-0665 for information. 'Gowns Galore' event set in Chester Members of the Chester First United Methodist Church are sponsoring "Gowns Galore," a used gown sale beginning with collection on Saturday. For a fee of $5 per dress, area girls are encouraged to bring in those gently worn prom/homecoming dresses to be sold at the price they establish. If the dress sells, the seller receives the money. Dresses may be brought to the church, at 240 Carolina Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The sale itself will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 14. Only cash will be accepted at the sale. All unsold dresses and/or money for sold dresses must be picked up at the church from 1 to 3 p.m. on Nov. 15. Any unclaimed dresses will be distributed to charity. Proceeds from this event will be given to Chester/Newell FISH. If additional information is needed call (304) 387-1469. Mrs. West Virginia search on The search is on for a new Mrs. West Virginia to represent the Mountain State in the 2010 Mrs. America Pageant in Tucson, Arizona. If you are married, at least 18 years of age and a resident of West Virginia you could be eligible to compete for the title of Mrs. West Virginia. The pageant date is Feb. 20 at the Renaissance Center in Huntington. Candle lighting to be held for Alzheimer's disease The Hancock County Senior Wellness Center on Gas Valley Road in New Cumberland will host a candle-lighting ceremony for families touched by Alzheimer's disease at 6:30 p.m. today. The program is part of a national observance sponsored by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and will include poetry and music. Those interested in participating should call (304) 564-3801. Brooke Senior Center to hold covered-dish dinner The Brooke County Senior Center, located at 948 Main St. in Follansbee, will hold a covered dish dinner on Wednesday to celebrate Veteran's Day. Dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by "The Donohues," who will sing patriotic selections. The senior center will provide baked ham, table settings and beverages. ABATE to hold euchre tournament The Upper Ohio Valley Chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education will hold a euchre tournament to benefit Coats for Kids on Nov. 14 at Legends Cafe in Weirton. Sign-ups will begin at 1 p.m. for the event, which will begin at 2 p.m. and include food, prizes and a 50-50 drawing. There will be a $5 entrance fee. For information call (304) 527-7066. Church to hold Christmas bazaar St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Three Springs Drive will hold a Christmas bazaar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 14. There will be a variety of Christmas crafts, baked goods, soup and sandwiches for sale. Extension Office offers free sewing, cooking classes The West Virginia University Brooke County Extension Office invites the community to join in fall sewing and cooking classes. Free sewing lessons are offered at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene on Collier's Way. Classes are at the beginner level and participants may work on piecing quilt tops by hand or machine. A?"Healthy Holiday Cooking Workshop" for slow cookers will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the River Room of the Brooke County Library. The workshop is free and participants are asked to register no later than Tuesday. Those interested may contact the extension office at (304) 748-3388. Local students among Bethany officers Several local students have been elected officers of the Bethany College Student Government Association.
