Wintersville women get update on flus seasons

LeAnn Cline, public health interstructure coordinator for the Steubenville Health Department, gave a Power Point presentation on "The Seasonal Flu vs. the H1N1 Flu - What to do to protect yourself?" at the GFWC/OFWC Wintersville Woman's Club's October luncheon meeting held at St. Florian Hall.

Marjean Sizemore presided and introduced Cline, who gave suggestions on prevention, symptoms of the flu and who should get the shots and pointed out the differences in the "live vaccine," nasal spray, and the "inactivated vaccine," shot version.

Cheryl Taylor introduced John Boilegh, education coordinator of the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation office in Wintersville, who gave a slide presentation featuring watershed management, the Community Rain Garden at Eastern Gateway Community College, conservation of water through the use of rain barrels and legislators' tours of the Jensie Mine.

He said part of his job is concerned with land use, including but not limited to farming. He said Jefferson County is 75 percent wooded and has a large amount of logging. He discussed other aspects of his job, such as outdoor educational programs for school children,

Guests were Joyce Kirkpatrick, Kathy Yeager, Dorothy Mastrioni, Marge Metcalf and Leslie Thermes.

Meditation and grace were given by Nancy Smith.

Jackie Davis read a thank-you letter from Megan Delkoski, the club $1,000 scholarship recipient.

Judy Anastasio congratulated Marjean Sizemore on becoming Southeast District president. Sizemore reported on the Fall Conference, noting Rose Logsdon, state president, asked the club to make its presentation of parliamentary procedure at state convention.

Jackie Davis the "Holiday Splendor" style show and luncheon progress was on target. Claudia Dorich said 319 reservation letters were sent , as well as those distributed at the meeting. Fran Sohovich gave the vendor report, Nancy Hukill displayed favors and Ella Jane Burns is receiving gift cards.

CarolynLee Barrett reported 483 items were collected for school supplies at a value of $289. She also read a thank-you notes from Wintersville Elementary for school supplies and from a class at Wayne Elementary a subscription of "Kind News".

Uncle Al's orders are due at the November meeting.

Nancy Honse announced Claudia Dorich will take the canned food items to the local food pantry for "Food for World Hunger."

Joyce Palmer collected the baby bottles for A.I.M. A sheet with pictures of our military receiving Christmas stockings from the Boatsie's Boxes group was circulated.

Burns told the group the fleece lap robes will have to be made at home on an individual basis. They are due at the January, February, March meetings.

Joan Doan said cell phones brought to the club will be given to Mosti Funeral Home to be sent to AT & T for converting to phone cards for the servicemen.

Boatsie's Boxes will assemble stockings Nov. 14 at the West Virginia National Guard Facility.
