Woman's Club hat contest raises funds

President Shelva Andrews presided at the meeting of the GFWC-WV Woman's Club of New Cumberland on Oct. 6. Devotions were given by Joyce Young, who read, "Autumn Visit."
Andrews introduced visitor Cathy Sobel, and welcomed members who were unable to attend the September meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect were recited by those in attendance.
Alice Mitchell, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, made final plans and signed up workers for the Yard/Bake Sale. She also distributed order forms for "Uncle Al's Nuts."?Orders are due at the November meeting, and all orders will be delivered by Thanksgiving.
Young reported on and displayed basket items being collected for Brooke Place girl's home.
The financial report was given by Mitchell, treasurer, who reminded members that dues should be paid as soon as possible.
The club's arts and crafts were judged and the winners were Ann Raines, with a quilted wall hanging; and Dorothy Hawkes, with a needlepoint picture and a cross stitch picture. Items were entered in the competition at the Northern District Convention.
A?decorated hat contest was held with each member expected to pay $1 to wear a hat during the meeting. The money collected was donated to "Heavenly Hats," an organization that purchases hats for those who have lost their hair due to illness.
Winners of the hat contest were: Prettiest, Shirley Wildman; Most Unique, Young; and Most Unusual, Hawkes. The winning hats were also entered into the convention's hat competition.
Andrews discussed participation in the convention. Hawkes has been nominated as a district officer Second Vice President. She asked for and received the club's endorsement to be placed on the ballot. Andrews will write the Letter of Endorsement.
The club voted to make a $50 donation to Camp Mountain Heart, where children who have heart health issues enjoy appropriate activities.
Patty Dietz from the Hancock County Wellness Center will demonstrate exercises for heart health at the next regular meeting.
