New Cumberland Woman's Club makes holiday plans
The GFWC-WV Woman's Club of New Cumberland met on Nov. 3 at the Swaney Memorial Library.
President Shelva Andrews presided over the meeting with Linda Marsh giving the devotions.
Dorothy Hawkes led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect.
Minutes of the September and October meetings were read by Patty Fisher, secretary, and the financial report was given by Alice Mitchell, treasurer.
A report on the club's recent yard sale was given by Joyce Young. Items left over from the sale were donated to the Hancock County Historical Museum for their future rummage sale.
Andrews and Hawkes reported on the recent GFWC-WV Northern District Convention that was held in Bethany on Oct. 24. Andrews reported on the business portion of the convention and Hawkes reported on the honors and awards received.
A "First Place" was won on the poster that was created to tell the story of the clubs activities. In the craft contest, Anna Raines received a "First Place" Blue Ribbon on a quilted wall hanging and Hawkes received a "First Place" Blue Ribbon for a cross-stitched picture and a "Second Place" Red Ribbon on a needlepoint picture.
Decorated hats that were entered for the "Heavenly Hats" charity were judged, and the hat entered by Shirley Wildman was judged as "The Prettiest."
Andrews announced the results of the district officer election and that the club's member, Hawkes, was elected to second vice-president of the Northern District.
It was voted that all of the obligations be paid for the club to qualify to be an Honor Club and Superior Club at the up- coming State Convention in March 2010.
The following motions were made and accepted:
- To take a name from The Salvation Army's Angel Tree and purchase as many of the items as possible for the child;
- A donation of $80 will be made to the New Cumberland Food Closet;
- The Community Christmas Card for the benefit of UPMC?Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh will be published in the Hancock County Courier;
- Members will bring canned and non-perishable food items to the Christmas Party to be donated to the New Cumberland Food Closet; and
- A basket of needed items will be donated to Brooke Place, the facility for girls in Brooke County.
Plans for the club's Christmas Party were discussed. The party will be held at the home of Alice Mitchell at 1 p.m. on Dec. 1. Participants are asked to bring finger foods.
Mitchell asked members to turn in their orders for "Uncle Al's Pecans," so that the order can be placed and delivered before Thanksgiving.
Andrews adjourned the meeting.
