Officials: City getting trashedNovember 13, 2009 - By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writerWeirton officials say garbage has been found throughout the city disrupting the efforts to clean the area up. During Monday's Weirton City Council meeting, Ward 5 Councilman George Kondik brought to the attention of his fellow councilmen the pile of debris located at the bottom of the off ramp of US 22 for the Harmon Creek and Cove Road exit. He said the pile was left there by the state and is an eyesore to the community. "Is there anything we can do to have them remove it?" asked Kondik. Ward 7 Councilman Max Fijewski stated he had spoken with state Sen. Ed Bowman, D-Weirton, about the debris, which was left there three months ago, and agrees with Kondik that something should be done and endorsed Kondik's request to do something about it. Mayor Mark Harris also stated he noticed several pieces of furniture and other trash items located at the bottom of Culler Road. He said one side has a fence up around it so no one can get in to use it as a dump, but now individuals are using the other side as a dumpster. "We're trying hard to keep the town clean," said Harris. "It's a shame a few bad apples have to come along and try to mess that up." Ward 6 Councilman David Dalrymple stated there were also garbage bags left along South 11th Street. He said the individuals cleaning up are doing a "great job" but the bags left along the road are just as much of an eyesore as the trash itself. Harris asked Public Works Director John Brown if he would have a crew come along and take care of the bags along South 11th Street and the items at the bottom of Culler Road. Council also agreed to issue a letter to the state for the request to remove the pile of debris from the current location. (Dickson can be contacted at adickson@weirtondailytimes.com) |
