Local organization helping communityNovember 18, 2009 - By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writerThe Red Knights International Motorcycle Club Chapter VI of West Virginia has been traveling around the area and helping those in the community. During the November Weirton City Council meeting, Mayor Mark Harris presented Chapter President Greg Salkovick with a plaque in recognition of the group's assistance in providing funds for the victims of a fire several weeks ago where three individuals died. The Red Knights donated approximately $1,000 to be used toward funeral expenses for the victims. "In grateful recognition of your charity involvement and assistance provided, the City of Weirton thanks you," said Harris. Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh, also a member of the Red Knights Chapter VI of West Virginia, stated he was glad to see the spirit of Ben Franklin alive in the community. He said it is important that those who can help in the community do so. During this past summer, the Red Knights International Motorcycle Club Chapter VI of West Virginia completed the Grand Tour. According to Marsh, the Grand Tour consists of more than 3,800 miles of riding and consisted of visiting many fire stations whose cities and towns first letter helps spell out several words: Grand Tour, Red Knight, Fire House and 12 Stations. Marsh said the Grand Tour exposes the club and helps build relationships between other chapters and members as well as get other current or retired firefighters involved. "We stop and check out equipment and one of the most fascinating stations was East Liverpool," said Marsh. He said there is a fire alarm box still located upstairs and rings into the dispatch center. He said the interesting thing about it is there was no address given, just other boxes located on streets throughout the city to let firefighters know the vicinity of the problem. "There is a lot of history there," he added. Marsh stated next year's ride will consist of completing the alphabet. The Red Knights International Motorcycle Club Chapter VI of West Virginia will be hosting a series of fundraisers over the next several months.
