Second all-school reunion 'a success'
Although Follansbee High School no longer exists, the FHS Alumni Association, is "alive and well," as proved by its great attendance at the Second All-School Reunion held recently at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.
A total of 395 reservations were made for the dinner-dance event that concluded with the serving of breakfast at midnight.
Nada Gesheff Todd, a member of the 1951 graduating class and Mary Margaret Brandt Conley, of the 1943 class, co-chaired the event.
Others serving on the reunion committee were Helen Gesheff Nicodemus, 1955; Betty DiGenero Bailey, 1950; Dora DiEugene Notni, 1947; Norma Fages Yingst, 1949; Bessie Burton Eddy, 1939; Sophie Gesheff Sanders, 1947; Dorthy Finley Deters, 1951; Catherine Kimmel Oughton, 1957; Norma Thomaselli Henson, 1954; Mary Ann Boyd Thorne, 1951; Judy Vickers-Bowman, 1961; Joan Batson Roberts, 1957; Isabelle Fages Johns, 1959; Gino Quattrochi, 1951; Janet Kocher Formis, 1955; Betty Hedmond Zak, 1953; John 'Bunny' Zak, 1952; Vernon 'Dede' Dunn, 1951; Betty Heckman Lanaghan, 1956; Antonette Iafrate 'Butch' Wilkerson, 1946; Loreto '88' Iafrate, 1946; and David Eddy, 1962.
Todd delivered the welcoming address and Quattrochi was master of ceremonies.
Eddy announced special recognition to the eight members of the 1938 graduating class who attended the event, all of whom are over 90 years of age. Members of the last class to have graduated from FHS in 1969, led by Banfi, honored the eldest group.
At a wrap-up meeting the Alumni group presented a $500 check to the Follansbee Branch of the Brooke County Library for contributions to the community, and for hosting the Association's committee meetings for the last seven years.
The first all-school celebration was held in 2006, and the next one will have Norma Thomaselli Henson, 1954, and Judy Vickers- Bowman, 1962, chairing the observance planned in 2012.
2012 is the year that the school will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of classes graduating from FHS.
The first high school was located on Allegheny Street, and had its first class graduating in 1912.
The Alumni Association plan their all-school reunions in three-year cycles.
The high school, located at the north end of town, now houses Follansbee Middle School.
