American Red Cross in dire need of
disaster volunteers
The American Red Cross River Valley Chapter is currently searching for volunteers in case of disaster. Volunteers will become members of an American Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT). Volunteers are needed for Brooke and Hancock counties.
Being a disaster volunteer is not an everyday duty. When a disaster strikes American Red Cross DATs are called upon. There is training involved at no cost to the volunteers.
"It is our duty to take care of our communities," says Russ Landers of the American Red Cross. "Good people help because help can't wait."
To inquire about becoming an American Red Cross DAT member, contact Russ Landers at (304) 232-0711 or by e-mail to rlanders@rivervalleyarc.org.
Solid waste board accepts plastics
The Brooke County Solid Waste Authority is accepting recyclable plastics at its bins at the Wellsburg Rite Aid, Follansbee and Wellsburg middle Schools, Hooverson Heights Primary School.
Only plastic containers bearing the numbers 1 or 2 within a triangle can be used. Such containers usually include milk jugs, laundry detergent and shampoo bottles and clear or green soft drink, sports drink or water bottles.
The board can't accept plastics labeled 3 through 7 or any styrofoam and must pay to have them dumped at a local landfill when it receives them. In anticipation of wide response, an additional bin has been added at the Rite Aid site. One of the bins will be designated for plastics and metals, while the other will be for paper only.
