Brooke County receives credit toward animal shelter project

By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writer
POSTED: November 28, 2009

WELLSBURG - Work on the new Brooke County Animal Shelter has been ongoing and Lombardi Development, contractor for the project, is giving the project a $1,200 credit.

Paul M. Lombardi II, president of Lombardi Development, issued a letter to Commissioner Bernie Kazienko, stating a $1,200 credit would be given to the Brooke County Commissioners in lieu of sealed floors, part of the Brooke County Animal Shelter project.

The commission agreed in September, pending the availability of funds, to accept a bid of $14,900 from Lombardi Development of Follansbee for the addition of a 24-by-50-foot paved shelter in which outdoor kennels for the shelter's animals could be placed.

Dog Warden Jim Andreozzi said a paved area for outdoor kennels is needed so animals from the shelter can be secured outside when staff is cleaning the shelter. He also noted animals are healthier when exposed periodically to fresh air.

According to reports, the Brooke County Animal Welfare League has provided $10,400 for the outdoor kennels and the commission has collected about $353,000, including $338,000 generated by a four-year levy supported by Brooke County voters in 2004 and various donations, for the new shelter.

Brooke County Commissioner Marty Bartz asked if the credit could go toward the roof which he previously discussed with Joe Starcher, Brooke County Schools career technical education director, and indicated students in Brooke High School's building construction class could take part in building the shelter.

"We have funds left over from several other grants so we'll just have to see how much we have exactly before we make any final decisions," stated Kazienko.

The current Brooke County Animal Shelter at 1801 Allegheny St. is in the process being moved to a new one at an area known as 44 Hollow off state Route 2 south of Beech Bottom.
