Rotary hears about healthy eating habits

December 30, 2009 - By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writer

With the end of the year approaching and the holiday season nearly over, the Rotary Club of Weirton Heights heard about some healthy eating habits for the new year.

Dr. Robert Marrow, former exercise and rehabilitation specialist at the Institute of Health Exercise and Rehabilitation, spoke to the Rotary Club of Weirton Heights about healthy eating habits and easy exercise routines to take them into the new year.

Marrow said keeping up with healthy eating habits and exercise routines can be difficult during the holidays. He said most families' activities involve eating large amounts of food and sitting around sharing stories.

In order to kick the overeating habits as the new year approaches, Marrow said setting a goal that is attainable is important.

"You can't do too much at once," he said. "Things get overwhelming and most New Year's resolutions don't stick so it needs to be something small that is easy for you."

Marrow said people can start by writing down their goals; things they either want to do or don't want to do. He said make sure whatever it is that is being done - eating smaller portions, walking for 20 minutes a day - fits into the individual's schedule.

Also, he suggested getting a workout partner to help stay motivated.

"Longevity and quality of life are at the heart of healthy eating and exercising," according to Marrow.

He said meat and potatoes are had with nearly every meal; but are also the hardest things to digest.

He said adding vegetables to the mix more often will help individuals feel better and give more energy to burn.

"Just take it a day at a time," said Marrow.
