Man killed in Route 2 accident Wednesday

By MARK J. MILLER, For The Weirton Daily Times
POSTED: December 31, 2009

CHESTER - A New Cumberland man died as the result of a two-vehicle accident Thursday evening on state Route 2.

John D. Hoffman, 77, was killed after his vehicle collided with a tanker truck near the entrance of the Ergon Chemical Plant on Route 2, according to a release from the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.

Hoffman reportedly was traveling south when his vehicle hit the tanker truck, which was turning onto the northbound lane from Quaker State Road. Hoffman was transported to East Liverpool City Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival, according to reports.

The driver of the tanker, Kevin R. Tapper, 51, of Venango, Pa., was uninjured in the accident, according to reports.

An autopsy on the victim will be performed by the Columbiana County Coroner's Office, and so far no charges have been filed regarding the incident, officials said.

The accident forced the closure of Route 2 for about an hour while responders and investigators worked the scene, according to the release. Initial reports of a hazardous material spilling from the tanker were false, as the tanker was carrying a wax material used at the chemical plant.

Responders to the scene included the Newell Volunteer Fire Department, Chester-Newell Ambulance Service and West Virginia State Police along with deputies from the county sheriff's department. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to officials.

Why people don't slow down on that stretch of road is beyond most people's reasoning!
