Community briefsJanuary 5, 2010Food handler class scheduled for Thursday The Hancock County Health Department has scheduled January's food handler class for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Swaney Memorial Library on state Route 2 in New Cumberland. Anyone involved in food preparation in Hancock is required to possess a current food handler card. Those attending the class will be issued a card that is valid in either Hancock or Brooke Counties in West Virginia. Attendees who volunteer to do food preparation for a not-for-profit organization will be issued a card good for one year at no costupon completion of the class. The cost of food handler cards for those attending the class who are employed in some type of food service industry are as follows: A food handler card that is valid for one-year costs $5;a card that is valid for two years costs $10; and a card valid for three years costs $15. Old Schoolhouse Players set auditions The Old Schoolhouse Players will hold auditions for "Into The Woods," directed by Stephen Santa from noon to 3 p.m. on Jan. 30, and again from 5 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 31. All auditions are by appointment only. Auditions will be held at the theater located in the Mt. Pleasant Township Community Center, located at 20 Wabash Ave. in Hickory, Pa. Attendees are asked to prepare 32 bars of a Broadway standard. Ruth Ann Fox, musical director, will be the accompanist. There will also be cold readings from the script. Wheeling Newcomer's Club to meet The Wheeling Newcomers Club will hold its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 at the Wheeling Country Club. Reservations are due by Sunday and membership is open to all women new to the area. January's program features Professional Organizer Tina Hazen. Depression, bipolar groups to meet The Wheeling Depression and Bipolar Support Group meets every month on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Whelan Hall at Wheeling Jesuit University. January meetings will be on Wednesday and Jan. 20. The Steubenville group meets every month on the second and fourth Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Board Room of Trinity East Hospital on Lawson Avenue. The January Meetings will be on Jan. 11 and 25. After-school program to be discussed Coordinators of the after-school program held by the Brooke-Hancock-Ohio-Marshall RSVP will meet at 10 a.m. Friday at the Brooke Senior Center.
