Washington County Farm Bureau to hold food drive

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington County Farm Bureau, with help from area 4-H clubs, will hold its annual food drive in February and March with all donations benefiting the Greater Washington County Food Bank.

In 2009, the farm bureau collected 6,100 pounds of non-perishable items and $2,100 in donations.

The number of people needing Food Bank assistance has increased dramatically in the past year, according to organizers.

The following items are needed: canned fruits, dried fruits, canned vegetables, dried vegetables, pastas, pasta sauces, non-fat dried milk, powdered drinks, canned juices, canned meats, dried meats, Hamburger Helper, canned seafood, dried seafood, flour, cooking oil and sprays, hot and cold cereals, instant oatmeals, sugar and sweetener, canned soups, dried soups, cake mixes, JELL-O instant puddings, condiments, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, personal hygiene items and paper goods.

Donation boxes are set up at participating locations throughout Washington County. Area donations boxes are located at Hickory Feed Mill, Corwin Sales and Service, Kauffman's Family Marketplace, McDonald Giant Eagle, Warner's Feed Store and Rep. Jesse White's offices in Burgettstown.

Monetary donations can be sent to the food bank directly by sending a check to Greater Washington County Food Bank, 1020 state Route 519, Eighty-Four, PA 15330. Make checks payable to Greater Washington County Food Bank and write "farm bureau" on the memo line.
