The Greater Weirton Senior Center is in need of assistance, according to reports from Weirton city officials, and we hope something can be done soon before this wonderful community resource disappears.
Mayor George Kondik recently told city council the center has requested the city to take over its operations, citing a $40,000 budget shortfall and owing $90,000 on the mortgage for a building it took over only a few short years ago.
It may not be possible for the city to fully take over the center's operations, and senior center officials reportedly have other options available to them. We just hope some kind of solution is found soon which will keep the center open.
This is a sad state of affairs for a facility which does so much, not just for our local senior citizens, but for much of the community.
We urge our local city, county and state officials, as well as area residents to come together with the senior center board in finding a way to continue providing this service for years to come.
