WEIRTON - With a new fiscal year comes new beginnings for many local communities, and the City of Weirton is no different, swearing in a new fire chief and two other officers with the Weirton Fire Department on Monday.
Mayor George Kondik swore in Jerry Shumate as the fire department's newest chief. Shumate and Capt. Bob Hinchee had been sharing in the responsibilities of the chief's position for much of the last year.
Also receiving their oaths of office Monday were Dan Mastrantoni, who was named captain, and Kevin Himmelrick, who was promoted to lieutenant.

Kondik said it was the first time the city has ever had a ceremony for three officers of this stature.
"Not only is this a beneficial day for the officers, but the citizens of Weirton," he said. "The caliber of these men make them ideal for their new positions as they continue to serve and protect the great city of Weirton."
Kondik thanked each of the men for all the years already served and wished them and their families the best as they continue in their chosen career. He said it amazes him to see such support not only from the families when the city does a swearing in, but the support from council and the city administration.
"It's like being a part of a big family and it's so important for us to stick together as a community," he added.
Shumate said the past year has been interesting and he appreciates the effort put forth by the 22 other members of the Weirton Fire Department for the great job done. He said the best part is that he and many other members started out in the department as young men and the dedication of those in the department will make his job easy and enjoyable.
"It is our job, the city manager, mayor and myself, to make these men successful and get them the resources they need to be successful," said Shumate. "And I look forward to our success for years to come."
Shumate, Himmelrick and Mastrantoni were surrounded by their families and friends and thanked those in attendance for the support over the years.
