WEIRTON - The Weirton Area Literacy Council announces the following events for July and August.
The Pre-GED Classes are being held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Mary H. Weir Public Library.
Council members and their families will attend the ice cream social at noon July 21 at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center in honor of "Rosie the Riveters," the women who worked in the mills and factories during World War II while men were serving in the military. This will be a LEAP Tour event for the Council.
The annual Family Literacy Picnic will be held at 5:30 p.m. July 25 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek Road. The council will provide chicken and bread, and those attending the picnic should bring side dishes, fruits or desserts. Make a reservation with to Pam Makricosta at 797-8510 by July 19.
Council members are in search of volunteers to help with the paper recycling project. Anyone interested may contact the literacy office at (304) 797-8510 for information.
Council members and their families will be attending the fourth-annual Festival of Nations at noon Aug. 18 at Weirton's Cove Event Center located at the former Cove Elementary School site.
