To the Editor,
It never ceases to amaze me how immature and petty some contributors to this forum can be. Name calling, sophomoronic humor and slightly veiled racist comments are the common thread among them. I suppose when you have a presidential candidate who loathes half the country and thinks a factory in China that crams 120 women into a dorm room with one toilet is great (on the same video, friends), there's not much to fall back on. Of course, there's always Lyin' Paul Ryan but he's probably busy trying to get his marathon time under an hour.
They always seem to use the phrase 'most people' as if this somehow makes what they claim legitimate. This shadowy bunch is always against something but they are never named nor is there any factual evidence that they exist except in the minds of these writers.
Let's check the claim that "Healthcare...is still the best in the world." Not even close. We ranked 37th, just behind the rich, first-world countries of Dominica and Costa Rica but still ahead of Slovenia and Cuba. Who ranks first? France. When compared to six other countries (who have single payer systems, by the way), the US ranked 'dead' last. We "spend twice as much as residents of other developed countries on healthcare, but get lower quality, less efficiency and have the least equitable system" said a Commonwealth Fund report.
Our writer also seems to forget that his candidate instituted Romnycare in Massachusetts, a fact Mitt is fleeing from now but which seems to be working quite well for the citizens of that state.
I'd like to address the people in our community who have just had their jobs at the Yorkville RG Steel mill taken away when billionaire owner Ira Rennert's company declared bankruptcy. This man is worth $5.5 billion and he closed the mill because of the environmental problems he was completely aware of when he purchased it. Because of this, a potential sale to Esmark is in jeopardy.
How do you feel about someone blithely taking away your job, your pension and your healthcare without a thought? Where do you direct your anger? At the government who enforces regulations that protect you and your family or at a billionaire who didn't want to spend $800,000-$2 million to clean up a mess he pledged he would?
And how about your healthcare? Do you older workers think you'll be able to afford it? At least with Obamacare, pre-existing conditions won't count against you. And with Obamacare, younger workers up to age 26 can remain on your parent's insurance. You also don't have a cap on what will be spent on care for you or your family should a catastrophic illness occur. And women workers, wives and daughters will be covered for annual checkups. Among other things.
What will you do if Romney is elected and repeals Obamacare? Accept Medicaid? And when he dismantles that? What will you do?
Do you think Mitt Romney cares? Obama cares.
