WEIRTON - Years of shopping around for high quality, low cost items is paying off for Joyce Martin and her daughter, Charity Kalata.

The duo recently opened Jacks Resale, 1347 Pennsylvania Ave.

"We've been planning on doing this for years," Martin said. "Everything finally just fell together - she found the building, the price was right, she got to go to part-time at work. The timing was just right for us."

PASSION FOR BARGAINS — Joyce Martin and her daughter, Charity Kalata, have parlayed their passion for bargain hunting into a new business, Jacks Resale in Weirton. Located at 1347 Pennsylvania Ave., the shop features a mix of old and new, offering up antique furniture, glassware, toys, collectibles as well as books, clothing and candles.

The shop carries a little bit of everything - antique furniture and toys, glassware, books, collectibles, decorations, clothing and even candles, handmade by Dorothy Soltesz. A lot of their merchandise is antique, "but there are a lot of new items, too," she said.

"We've always enjoyed going to Goodwill stores, auctions, that type of thing," Martin said. "We'd buy things thinking they'd go in our store some day."

The women had worked at a trucking company in Pottery Addition for years, "but with the economy, how everything fell apart, we just wanted to do something we enjoyed."

"We love bargains," Martin added. "If you walk through our store you'll see everything is low-priced. We only buy (low-priced items). We try to pass on our discounts to the public. The economy has been so bad, we just felt if we get a good deal on something we should pass it on."

Martin makes her home in New Cumberland, Kalata in Weirton.

"We've been open about three months," Martin said. "I don't think a lot of people know about us yet. We still get people stopping in who say they didn't know we were here. But most people who come in and very interested in our items and our prices. We've had a whole bedroom suit for a $100 - we figure if we get a good price on something, we should pass it on."

Jacks Resale does not accept consignments, though it does take donations. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed Sundays.
