Letter writer all wet

Weirton Daily Times

To the editor:

I will try to keep this letter short and to the point.

In response to Bill Kopras' letter to the editor of Oct. 28 ("Voters should clean house"), it is pretty obvious that he is "all wet."

The Smithfield water issue came about because of poor management by the Smithfield administration. Water was being sent to the village and was not being paid for, so Jefferson County had to take over. After all, you can't shut off the water to a village as a whole. It makes sense to take it over to start collecting for the water that is sent there. I didn't see 7,000-plus water customers objecting to this takeover, as was claimed. It also opens the path for supplying those in the outlying area that have petitioned for water for many years.

Regarding purchase of the Towers building, it would make sense if the money saved on rent, leases and operating expenses being spent right now at many sites throughout the county, would pay for the mortgage for this purchase. Research is currently in process to determine this. If, and only if, this proves to be worthwhile could the purchase happen.

Also, in support of researching the Towers purchase, I personally watched a partially disabled elderly person walk a full block through the alley to the courthouse so that person could pay their taxes (yes, some folks do this in person), pay the taxes, then walk all the way back, just because there is no parking around the courthouse. The sight was agonizing. I think they deserve better.

It is an affront to accuse the use of nationality or ethnicity in the argument.

In my 70-plus years in Jefferson County, this is the first board of commissioners that has performed honestly and openly, let's keep it that way.
