NEW CUMBERLAND - The Hancock County Senior Services will host the seventh annual candle-lighting ceremony to raise awareness of Alzheimer's Disease and dementia at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at the senior center on Gas Valley Road.
The service remembers those who have died as a result of Alzheimer's Disease and those who are dealing with the disease and related dementia and their families. It includes a candle lighting, reading the names of the deceased and ill, poetry and music. To have a family member memorialized or for information, call (304) 564-3801.
Also at the senior center, an AARP driver safety program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 13-14. Those attending will be instructed in defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and adjusting to age-related changes. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. The Christmas party will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 4. Dinner begins at 4:30 p.m. The event will include music, prizes and the crowning of the 2012 king and queen. The cost is $9 per person. Registration is due by Nov. 27. Transportation will be provided. To register, call (304) 564-3801.
The center will sponsor a trip to have dinner at Oglebay Park's Wilson Lodge, followed by a tour of the park's lights display, with the bus leaving the center at 5:45 p.m. Dec. 14. The cost is $50 for those paying before Nov. 16 and $55 for those paying after.
Nurse Marla Simmons and Sally Knabenshue will hold the program "A Healthy U With Diabetes," beginning at 1 p.m. Jan. 7 at the center. The six-week course will help diabetics, pre-diabetics and those who have a diabetic family member make better lifestyle choices. The program is sponsored by the Marshall University's Center for Rural Health.

Everybody's Fitness exercise program, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays;

Zumba exercise program, 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
bingo, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; and
Tai Chi program, 4 p.m. Thursdays.
Special events include:
Singing Seniors, 10 a.m. at Weirton Geriatric Center Nov. 6, Stone Pear Pavilion Nov. 13 and Adkins Nursing Home Nov. 27;
book club, 1 p.m. Tuesday;
Wii bowling tournament, 1 p.m. Nov. 8 and 29; and
card-making classes, 1 p.m. Nov. 8, cost $3.
The center will be closed Nov. 22-23 in observance of Thanksgiving.
