Energy Express, an AmeriCorps summer nutrition and reading program, is recruiting members to serve as mentors and community coordinators at 80 sites statewide.
Those participating must be available from June 13 to Aug. 2 and be at least 18 by June 13. They must be a college-bound high school senior, college student or recent college graduate without full-time employment.
Mentors lead small groups of school-aged children in reading, writing, art and drama; non-competitive recreation; and two family-style meals. They also recruit and train community and teen volunteers.
In return for their 300 hours of service, Energy Express AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $1,850 and an educational award of $1,175 valid for up to seven years to pay for college tuition or loans.
Individuals serving as an AmeriCorps member who are 55 years of age or older are now able to transfer their Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to their children, grandchildren and foster children. The transfer award must be used within 10 years.
Additionally, with the enactment of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, individuals can now serve up to four total AmeriCorps state and national terms of service or the value of two full-time education awards. Therefore, individuals can now serve up to four summers with Energy Express if they have not served in any other AmeriCorps, NCCC or VISTA programs or don't intend to serve with any other programs.
Applications are available online at www.energyexpress.wvu.edu or by calling the Energy Express state office at (304) 293-3855. The selection process begins March 1.
Applications are accepted until all positions are filled.
The Energy Express AmeriCorps program is under the leadership of West Virginia University Extension Service 4-H Youth Development, and is funded in part by grants from the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts and Volunteer West Virginia.
