Michael D. Shaw of Colliers has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank to be attained in the Boy Scouts of America.
Shaw is a member of Troop No. 57 sponsored by Open Door Baptist Church in Colliers.
His service project was to design and build two sets of cement steps with hand rails in the Follansbee Park.
The steps lead from the walkway to the basketball courts. Prior to this project, anyone using the basketball court had to maneuver down a steep bank.
For this project, Shaw spent much time planning, meeting and recruiting helpers, initially having to meet with and obtain approval from the City of Follansbee. He then had to raise more than $400. Business donations were made by McMaster's Construction, M & M True Value Hardware and Lowes. More than 80 volunteer hours were logged by Shaw, his troop, friends, and youth group and church members.
Shaw is one of the original members of Troop No. 57 and the third Scout from the troop to earn the rank of Eagle. He also is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Through scouting, Shaw has participated in a 50-mile bike ride, a three-day canoe trip and flown in a private airplane. He also has camped in the rain, snow and heat and "has eaten all sorts of interesting camp food."
A senior at the Jefferson County Christian School in Wintersville, Shaw is the son of John and Ann Shaw of Colliers. He plans to attend the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
