From the Pulpit: A marriage made in heaven

December 16, 2012
By THE REV. JAMES FOGLIO - Weirton Covenant Church , Weirton Daily Times

The scriptures teach that he who finds a wife finds a good thing. The Lord intended marriage to last a lifetime. It is not to be based on a whim or lust but a commitment to love for better or worse, in sickness and health till death do us part. Marriage is to reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church. We (the Church) are the bride of Christ and a man is to love his wife as Christ loved the Church. Jesus is a life giving spirit who gave himself for our benefit. His selfless gift on the cross demonstrated his great love. The crucifixion removes all doubt of His care for us.

The serpent of old deceived Adam and Eve convincing them that disobeying God would bring greater happiness. He is still telling the same lie today and it is still producing the same results: separation from God, expulsion from the garden, and a life of toil and misery. The misery and strife usually cause a marriage to end in divorce or at the very least a strained relationship. God hates divorce knowing the damage it has on life. Satan laughs having accomplished his purpose. He came but to kill, steal and destroy. He blinds the eye of the unbelieving and takes advantage of our ignorance.

There is One who enlightens every man and opens our eyes to see the glory of God. He leads us into a new way of living. He heals the mind and satisfies the soul. He will give you a new heart and put His Spirit within you. You become a new creature in Christ. We become partakers of the divine nature. God is Love and His nature is the perfect manifestation of it. Love is patient, Love is kind, love is not jealous, does not count a wrong suffered, does not seek its own. When a man exemplifies these attributes toward his wife the marriage is based on a strong foundation. By doing right he will earn his wife's respect and alleviate her of any fears. Men make it easy for your wife to love you. Live with her in an understanding way knowing she is a joint heir of the grace of God.

A wife is to respect her husband not being combative or judgmental. If each partner would do his or her part (husbands love your wives and wives honor your husbands) divorce would end.

Keep the Commandments and obey His Word and love will not end. Love Never Fails.

If you are reading this article and your marriage is struggling; give your heart to Jesus, get active in church, and find a pastor who can help. Do not let the devil destroy your marriage but let Christ heal all wounds and hurts. If you humble yourselves, He will grant you a marriage made in heaven. God bless.
