Brooke suffers 1st loss

MORGANTOWN - Nathan Adrian scored a game-high 29 points as the Morgantown boys basketball team handed Brooke its first loss of the season Wednesday, 68-58.

The Mohigans built a 22-12 lead after one and a 38-22 lead at the break.

Eric Johnson paced the Bruins with 20 points. Russell Schwertfeger added 12 and Jesse Gambellin 10.

Brooke visits Indian Creek Friday.

Panthers grab first win

RAYLAND - The Buckeye Local girls basketball team earned its first win of the season with a 59-44 victory over visiting Brooke Wednesday.

The Panthers outscored the Bruins 26-14 in the final quarter to break open a close game.

Amy Balk led the way with 15 points and five rebounds. Alexis Valuska added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Kierstyn Czuchran chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, Kayla Fillipovich delivered eight points and nine rebounds, Lauren Swiger eight rebounds and three steals and Becky Zeroski five assists and three steals.

Angela Staffileno led the Bruins with a game-high 24 points.

Buckeye Local, which hosts Edison tonight, outscored Brooke 38-18 in the second half.

Red Knights hold on

TORONTO - The Toronto girls basketball team held on for a 47-44 victory over visiting Wellsville Wednesday.

The Red Knights held a 33-19 lead at the break, but the Tigers made it close by outscoring Toronto 17-6 in the final eight minutes.

Mikayla Bauman led the Red Knights with 11 points. Lindsey Bodnar added nine.

Toronto hosts Bishop Donahue at noon Saturday.
