CHESTER - Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort donated 85 turkeys to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley recently, bringing the total number of turkeys donated by the casino to area nonprofit organizations to more than 850 over the past month.
Second Harvest Food Bank in Youngstown, Ohio, received the turkeys from the Casino on Dec. 21, and will distribute to hunger relief organizations in the region over the next few days.
"The holidays can be a difficult time for many families in need and we are glad that we can be of assistance," said Chris Kern, Mountaineer general manager.
"We are pleased to work with Second Harvest Food Bank who will share Mountaineer's donation among several worthwhile service organizations through their distribution network for the second straight year ."
"We appreciate the continued support of Mountaineer," said Michael Iberis, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank.
"This donation of turkeys will provide many meals to families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties this holiday season. Food Bank member agencies have reported an 18 percent increase in the number of people who need food assistance this year."
In November, Mountaineer Casino donated turkeys to The Salvation Army and the Community Bread Basket in Weirton, Mountaineer Chaplaincy, Community Resource Center of East Liverpool, and New Cumberland Social Services.
Combined with the latest contribution to Second Harvest Food Bank, the number of turkeys donated by the casino this year is 859.
