Museum announces programming

WEIRTON - The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center has announced several upcoming activities.

They include:

6 p.m. Jan. 10, "Archeology Within the Upper Ohio River Area." Robert Maslowski, retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Archeologist, will present.

noon Feb. 2, "African-American Archeology in West Virginia and the Ohio Valley." Heather Cline, Grave Creek Mound Archeological Complex lead curator, will present, and Museum Secretary Kim Salter will chair. The new Dunbar School history display, with display space donated by Bob Kelley, will be unveiled.

10 a.m. March 9, "The Final Days of Weirton Steel." Tom Zielinsky will speak about his book, "The Final Days of Weirton Steel: Could the Collapse Been Prevented?"

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13 "Fifth Annual Festival of Nations." The event celebrates the city's varying ethnic heritages and is chaired by Dr. Juginder Luthra. It will take place at the Weirton Event Center, located at the former Cove School site, located on East Street. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Millsop Community Center on Main Street.

2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 27, "Afternoon Tea with Rosie the Riveters." The museum will host those women who did industrial work during World War II. Museum Vice President Pam Makricosta chairs.

6 p.m. Sept. 10, "Rediscovering Holliday's Cove." David. T. Javersak and Michael E. Nogay will talk about the history of the local area, including the Village of Holliday's Cove, before Weirton existed.

Oct. 19, "Fifth Annual Robert Haworth Memorial Art Exhibition." The museum will host an exhibition featuring several area artists, especially those who studied under Haworth, a Weir High School art teacher from 1932 to 1969. Dr. Ray Greco chairs.

All events, other than the Festival of Nations, are scheduled to be held at the museum located at 3149 Main St.

Museum President Dennis Jones is composing a book of photographs, and those who want to help identify those in the photos can attend meetings at 10 a.m. the third Saturday of January, February and March.
