Top Steubenville spellers

Elonna Mitchell, a Virtual Learning Academy seventh-grader, placed first in the Steubenville City School District spelling bee held Wednesday evening at Harding Middle School. Mitchell correctly spelled “predicate,” the part of a sentence or clause that expresses what is said of the subject, usually consisting of a verb with or without objects, complements or modifiers, to win. The top eight spellers will advance to the 29th-annual Jefferson-Harrison County Regional Spelling Bee presented by Eastern Gateway Community College and the Herald-Star. The regional bee, also sponsored by the Rotary Club of Steubenville and Huntington Bank, will be held at 1 p.m. March 2 at Buckeye North Elementary School in Brilliant. - Summer Wallace-Minger
