Still time to help the United Way

January 13, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

The Weirton United Way held its third report luncheon on Friday, and though that traditionally used to mark the end of the annual fundraising campaign, officials have vowed to continue working until they reach the $280,000 goal.

As it stands, the United Way has been able to raise $241,364.28 for the current campaign. That's a great accomplishment given our area's economic climate, but we know United Way officials don't feel it is good enough.

We know how much the 15 member agencies depend on the money raised through this campaign, and we know there would have to be several programs affected if the money was not available.

We commend the leaders of the Weirton United Way, its campaign team, volunteers and all those who have contributed in some way, for reaching into their hearts and their pockets to help those in our community who are in need.

We also encourage everyone who is able to find a way to help out in some way.

As Weirton United Way President John Frankovitch said on Friday, "Close isn't good enough." The organization is still in need of $40,000 to reach its goal, and we know they will find a way to get that money.

If everyone in Weirton gives only a few dollars, it would give more than is needed. Each of us can find a way to help out and keep so many programs operating for those who need them.

The United Way will hold its second-annual Pre Super Bowl Party Feb. 2 at the Weirton Knights of Columbus. It's one more opportunity for residents to contribute to this wonderful organization.

We ask our community to continue showing its support for the Weirton United Way.

By coming together through this organization, we make our area a better place for everyone.
