Priority should be to protect children

January 13, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

To the editor:

I am glad to see that the nationwide coverage of the alleged rape in Steubenville has awakened the justice system to its responsibilities. It is quite appalling to see responses in these pages that are more concerned about the media's coverage or the actions of Anonymous than about the brutal rape of a teenage girl. Yes, the whole country is watching now. This should not trouble anyone who is doing the right thing.

I hope the people of Steubenville and Jefferson County will show that their priority is to protect their children, not to whitewash the reputations of a handful of criminals. Until the expose, the message to boys was that they could commit any crime as long as they were good at a game. That is not only a further assault on this girl's dignity and rights, but a sure-fire way to create more crime.
